Your 21st Century Local
The Exchequer has existed as a licensed premises since the Basingstoke canal, completed in 1794, was being constructed. Originally named The Chequers, it provided an overnight stop for boatmen and their horses travelling along the canal. For five pence (2p) a night, a man received a clay pipe, some tobacco and a straw bed in the stable loft. Previously called the George and Lobster and now renamed The Exchequer, today, the pub is non-smoking and we have greatly expanded what is on offer, however the pub still retains its friendly and welcoming character.
The Exchequer welcomes the Crookham Mummers every Boxing Day who usually start their traditional play here at noon before moving on the Crescent Green and two other village pubs. The play has been performed on Boxing Day for around 130 years and is an essential part of the Christmas festivities in Crookham Village. With colourful costumes, spirited sword fight scenes, a joke or two and the friendly competition between the actors, it really is something not to be missed!
While The Exchequer has a rich and colourful past - rumour has it that the pub is haunted by the ghost of a man who died here in a shotgun accident - today, the premises features a relaxed atmosphere with a wood burning stove and slate flagstone floor in the bar. Customers are able to park in the large car park and enjoy the excellent dining facilities in the restaurant area, on the sun terrace to the front of the pub or in the beer gardens to the rear. Vegetarians and Coeliacs are well catered for and the new supper menu justifies a visit on its own. The Exchequer boasts a great choice of real ales, 10 wines offered by the glass, a fine selection of new alcoholic beverages, cappuccinos, lattes, herbal teas and much more. The Exchequer really is your 21st century local.
